Day of Silence

Friday, April 25 is the National Day of Silence. The event was started at The University of Virginia in 1996. The day of silence is meant to exemplify the silence that GLBT individuals are silenced daily when they are called names, bullied, and taunted with no one making it stop.

What are you doing to break the silence?

Did you know?

  • Did you know that some girls don't play sports because they are afraid someone will call them a lesbian or they are afraid one of their teammates or a coach might be a lesbian?
  • Did you know that lesbian and bisexual women in sport are discriminated against based on stereotypes and homophobia?
  • Did you know that gay boys and men in sport keep their identities secret out of fear of harassment from teammates and coaches?
Dr. Pat Griffin of The University of Massachusetts, Amherst has been in contact with Caucus Co-chair Mary Paradise and asked us to share information about It Takes A Team.
Dr. Griffin writes...
I am the director of It Takes A Team! Education Campaign for LGBT Issues in Sport. We are an education and advocacy initiative of the Women’s Sports Foundation (but we address homophobia in men’s and women’s sports). Our mission is to make school-based athletic programs safe and respectful for LGBT staff and students. We have a comprehensive and up-to-date array of resources for athletic directors, coaches, parents and student-athletes available on our web site - www.ItTakesATeam.org .

We are offering our DVD to schools for the cost of postage and handling - about $10. Any help you can give us in getting the word out about It Takes A Team and our resources would be great.

List Serve

We have been without a member List Serve (aka Group E-mail System) for a few years now and are very happy that we have been able to coordinate with NEA and again have an electronic mail distribution network facilitated on NEA servers!

If you are a member and have an active e-mail address on file with us, you should have begun receiving e-mail messages, April 3. If you are a member and did not receive a message, perhaps you've changed your e-mail address or do not have one registered with the Caucus.

To update your e-mail and/or become a part of the List Serve send an e-mail to IT@nea-glbtc.og . You must be a member of NEA-GLBTC in order to be a part of the List Serve.

We are working on an online membership application form for new members and annual renewals.
